NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills

 

This qualification will focus on the use of counselling skills in everyday life and work, and some of the approaches that underpin the use of these skills. You will have the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills, and engage in a helping interaction appropriately.

 

Course duration: 160 hours of study, flexible around you

(e.g. Approximately 11 weeks, based on 15 hours of study per week)

Please note: This qualification does not qualify learners to practise as a counsellor, but is for anyone who would like to develop their counselling skills for use in work or a personal capacity.

 

This qualification will allow progression onto further education,  complements other relevant programmes (e.g. health and social care, children’s care, learning and development, voluntary and community work), and into a variety of job roles and occupational areas in which counselling skills are used.

Modules

To be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills, learners are required to successfully complete four mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Using counselling skills
  • Unit 2: Introduction to counselling skills theories
  • Unit 3: Diversity and ethics in the use of counselling skills
  • Unit 4: Counselling skills and personal development

Entry Requirements

There are no specific recommended prior learning requirements for this qualification, however, learners should have a minimum of Level 1 English and Maths understanding.

Assessment

Each unit is followed by a group of assessment questions, designed to test your knowledge of the material you have been studying.

Once you have completed each unit assessment, you will submit them to your tutor for marking.

Your tutor may highlight areas where you need a little more information to ensure you fully understand each area in order to pass the unit.

The forms of assessment also includes a skills session:

Where the learner is working in a helping role in work or as a volunteer they may ask a line manager to observe them whilst they are in a one-to-one helping session using the counselling skills. 

For learners who are not working or volunteering in a helping role, they will need to undertake a roleplay either on teams with a peer or at home with a friend, and video record this. The roleplay cannot be undertaken with a relative or partner or spouse.

Progression

Achievement of this qualification will help support progression onto further education, complements other relevant programmes (e.g. health and social care, children’s care, learning and development, voluntary and community work), and into a variety of job roles and occupational areas in which counselling skills are used.

  • Must be aged 19 years or over.
  • Ensure that you have not already completed the course you wish to enrol on.
  • Must be a UK National; You must have lived in the UK for the last 3 years OR be able to prove your residency status, for example, Indefinite leave to remain, settled status or you are an Asylum seeker who has been in the UK for more than 6 months.
